Professional Experience

Ed Bates is a partner in the accounting firm, Stayner Bates, PC.  His practice emphasizes federal and state tax and business planning for private equity firms and investors, closely held businesses and business owners. He was formerly a partner with the international accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he served as the Tax Partner-in-Charge of the local office, Partner-in-Charge of Emerging Business Services and a member of the regional management committee of the firm for 10 years. During his 22 years with this firm he provided consulting and planning services for both closely-held and large international clients. He has been qualified as an expert witness in tax and business issues in Utah and California.

He has been the chief financial officer and a director of several manufacturing and high tech companies and is currently serving as a director of several businesses and non-profit organizations. Mr. Bates has substantial experience in financial controls and operations in developing companies.

 

Professional and Community Activities

Ed graduated from the University of Utah and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants. He was formerly a member of the District Advisory Council of the Internal Revenue Service and the Estate Planning Council of Salt Lake City. For many years he served as a member of the University of Utah and Utah State University Accounting Advisory Boards, and the Brigham Young University Accounting Board of Advisors.

He has been an officer and/or board member of the following community organizations: Chairman of Pioneer Theatre Company, Vice-Chairman and Treasurer of Ballet West, Treasurer of The Alta Club, Secretary/Treasurer of the Utah Arts Festival, Secretary/Treasurer of the Utah Healthcare Institute, and on the board of directors for Turn Community Services, the Salt Lake Art Center, the Utah Emergency Medical Training Council, St. Marks Hospital, the University of Utah Fine Arts Board and Westminster College.
